Answer Engine Optimization (AEO): Best Practices for 2026

By · · 7 min read

Answer engine optimization (AEO) is the practice of structuring your content so that answer engines, such as Google's AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Perplexity and Microsoft Copilot, can pull a direct answer from it and cite you as the source. Where SEO aims for a click from a list of links, AEO aims to be the answer itself.

Most AEO guides online are written by companies selling AEO tracking software. This one sticks to what the search engines themselves have published, plus how I structure content for my own site and my clients.

What is answer engine optimization?

Answer engine optimization is writing and structuring web content so that systems which answer questions directly can find it, understand it, and quote it. The goal is to be the source an AI assistant or search feature uses when someone asks a question your business can answer.

The term started with featured snippets and voice assistants, which read out a single answer. It matters much more now that AI assistants answer questions directly by stitching together pieces from several pages.

What are answer engines?

An answer engine is any system that responds to a question with an answer rather than only a list of links. Today the main ones are:

  • Google: featured snippets, AI Overviews and AI Mode
  • ChatGPT with search
  • Perplexity
  • Microsoft Copilot and Bing's AI answers
  • Voice assistants such as Siri, Alexa and Google Assistant

They work differently under the hood, but they share one habit: they look for a clear, specific passage that answers the question, and they prefer sources they can trust.

How do answer engines choose which content to use?

Answer engines break pages into smaller passages and pick the ones that answer the question most clearly. Microsoft described this directly in October 2025: "AI assistants don't read a page top to bottom like a person would," and "these modular pieces are what get ranked and assembled into answers" (Microsoft Advertising blog).

That has two consequences. First, every section of your page competes on its own, so a strong answer buried in a weak page can still be used, and a vague section won't be. Second, the page still has to be found first. The same Microsoft post says "Traditional SEO fundamentals still matter," and Google states there are no special requirements for its AI features beyond being indexed and eligible for a snippet (Google Search Central).

Question-style searches are where this matters most. In Pew Research Center's 2025 browsing study, 60% of Google searches starting with "who," "what," "when" or "why" produced an AI summary (Pew Research Center).

What is the difference between AEO and SEO?

AEO builds on SEO rather than replacing it. SEO gets a page found and ranked; AEO makes the content inside it easy to extract and quote.

Aspect SEO AEO
Goal Rank a page high in the results Be the answer an engine quotes
Unit that competes The whole page Each passage or section
Success looks like A click from the results page A citation, a mention, or a click from an answer
Main levers Relevance, links, technical health Direct answers, structure, sourced facts, clarity
Where it shows up Blue links Featured snippets, AI Overviews, chat answers, voice

GEO (generative engine optimization) is a close cousin that focuses on AI systems specifically. I cover the research behind it in generative engine optimization strategies. In practice, the three overlap so much that one well-structured page serves all of them.

AEO best practices for 2026

These ten practices come from what Google and Microsoft have published, plus the research on what gets cited.

  1. Make the page crawlable first. No answer engine can quote a page it can't reach. Check robots.txt, keep key content in HTML text, and make sure the page is indexed in Google Search Console.
  2. Phrase headings as the questions people ask. Microsoft calls headings "chapter titles that define clear content slices" for AI. Use "How much does SEO content cost?" rather than "Pricing."
  3. Answer directly under each heading in 40–60 words. Lead with the answer, then explain. That first paragraph is the passage most likely to be lifted.
  4. Make every section stand on its own. Avoid "as mentioned above." An engine may quote one section without the rest of the page.
  5. Use lists for steps and tables for comparisons. Structured formats are easy to extract and easy to read.
  6. Add numbers and name their sources. A study presented at KDD 2024 found that adding statistics, quotations and citations raised content's visibility in AI answers by about 30–40% (Aggarwal et al., arXiv:2311.09735).
  7. Don't hide answers. Microsoft's guidance: "Don't hide important answers in tabs or expandable menus," and "Avoid relying on PDFs for core information."
  8. Add structured data, with honest expectations. Schema markup helps machines understand what a page is about. But since August 2023, Google shows FAQ rich results only for well-known government and health sites (Google Search Central blog), so add it for clarity, not for a rich result.
  9. Show who wrote it and why they know. Author names, real experience and first-hand examples give engines and readers a reason to trust the answer.
  10. Keep it current. Update numbers and dates when they change, show an "updated" date, and ask Search Console to recrawl the page.

What does AEO look like? A before-and-after example

Here's a section from a hypothetical web design agency's page, before and after AEO.

How much does a small business website cost?

A small business website typically costs $1,500–$5,000 with us, depending on the number of pages and features. A five-page site with a contact form and basic SEO usually lands around $2,500 and takes three weeks. E-commerce and booking systems add to the cost.

The "after" version answers the exact question people search, gives specific numbers, and stands on its own. An answer engine can quote it as is. (The prices are illustrative; on a real page, every figure must match the business.)

How do you measure AEO results?

Start with a short list of 10–20 questions your customers ask. Once a month, ask them in Google, ChatGPT, Perplexity and Copilot, and record whether your site is cited. In Google Search Console, watch impressions for question-style queries: rising impressions with flat clicks often means your page is appearing in AI Overviews. To understand that pattern, read how AI Overviews affect SEO.

Paid AEO tracking tools automate this, but a spreadsheet and a monthly check are enough for a small business to start.

Common AEO mistakes

  • Chasing schema instead of content. Markup can't make a vague answer useful.
  • Writing for the machine. Stiff, keyword-heavy text reads badly and, according to the GEO study, keyword stuffing lowers AI visibility.
  • Answers buried in long intros. If the answer starts in paragraph four, the engine may use someone else's.
  • Unsupported claims. "We're the best" gives an engine nothing to cite. A number with a source does.
  • Ignoring classic SEO. Pages that aren't indexed or that rank on page five are rarely chosen as answers.

Want your content built for answer engines?

You can apply everything above yourself: start with your five most important pages, rewrite each heading as a question, and put a direct answer under it. If you'd rather have it done for you, I write and restructure content so it ranks in Google and gets quoted by AI answers. Here's what that kind of content costs, or tell me about your site.

FAQ

Is AEO replacing SEO?

No. Answer engines mostly use pages that search engines can already find and trust, so SEO decides whether you're in the running. AEO decides whether your content is the passage they choose.

What does AIO mean in answer engine optimization?

AIO usually stands for "AI optimization," another name for optimizing content for AI-generated answers. Some people also use it as shorthand for Google's AI Overviews. Either way, the practices are the same as AEO.

Does schema markup help with AEO?

It helps machines understand your page, and Microsoft recommends it. But it isn't a shortcut: Google says there's no special schema required for its AI features, and FAQ rich results now appear only for authoritative government and health sites.

How long does AEO take to work?

Engines that browse live, like Perplexity, can pick up changes as soon as they recrawl a page, sometimes within days. Google's features follow normal crawling and indexing, which can take days to weeks.

Can a small website win at AEO?

Yes. Because answer engines judge individual passages, a small site with a clearer, better-sourced answer can be cited alongside much bigger brands. The GEO study found these tactics helped lower-ranked pages the most.
