What Is SEO Writing? A Plain-English Guide With Examples
SEO writing is the practice of writing web content so it ranks in search engines like Google and fully answers what the searcher wanted. It starts before the first sentence, with research into what people type and what they expect to find, and it continues after the draft, with titles, headings and links that help search engines understand the page.
I've done SEO writing for nine years, from blog posts and buying guides to local service pages for US and UK brands, and today I lead a team that writes it. This guide explains it the way I explain it to new writers.
What does SEO writing mean?
SEO stands for search engine optimization. SEO writing means creating content that a search engine can understand and a reader finds genuinely useful, so the page shows up when people search and satisfies them when they click.
Both halves matter. A page that ranks but doesn't help people loses its position over time. A page that's helpful but that no one can find never gets the chance. Google puts it this way: the content it wants to rank is "created primarily for people, and not to manipulate search engine rankings" (Google Search Central).
How is SEO writing different from regular writing?
SEO writing starts from what readers are already searching for, while regular writing often starts from what the writer wants to say. That one difference changes the topic, the title, the structure and even the length.
| Aspect | Regular writing | SEO writing |
|---|---|---|
| Starting point | An idea or a story | A search query and the intent behind it |
| Title | Creative, sometimes vague | Clear, includes the main search phrase |
| Opening | Builds up to the point | Answers the question first |
| Structure | Flows freely | Headings that match the questions people ask |
| Success measure | Readers enjoyed it | Readers found it, got their answer and took the next step |
Good SEO writing still reads well. Readers shouldn't be able to tell it was planned around a keyword.
How does SEO writing work, step by step?
Most SEO content I write or review goes through six steps:
- Keyword research. Find the phrase people actually search, how often, and how hard it is to rank for. Tools like Semrush show the volume and difficulty.
- Search intent. Look at what already ranks. If the top results are all guides, a sales page won't rank, and the other way around.
- Outline. Plan headings around the questions searchers ask. Google's "People also ask" box is a good source.
- Writing. Answer the main question early, use plain language, and add what the current results lack: examples, data, first-hand experience.
- On-page SEO. Write the title tag and meta description, use the main phrase in the H1 and opening, add links to related pages, and describe images.
- Review and update. Check facts, publish, then watch Google Search Console to see which searches the page appears for and improve it over time.
What does SEO writing look like? A before-and-after example
Here's a simplified example of an opening paragraph for a page targeting "airport car service in Dallas" (an illustration, not a client page).
Before:
Welcome to our website! We are a premier transportation company dedicated to providing excellence. Our team is passionate about making every journey special, and we look forward to serving you.
After:
Need a car service to DFW or Dallas Love Field? We pick up from any Dallas address, track your flight, and wait 60 minutes free on arrivals. Book online in two minutes and get a fixed price with no surge pricing.
The second version names the service and the airports people search for, answers the first questions a traveler has, and gives a clear next step. It's also simply better writing: specific instead of vague. (The details here are illustrative; on a real page, every claim must match the business.)
What are the basics of SEO content writing?
These basics apply to almost every SEO page:
- One main topic per page, with one primary search phrase.
- A title under about 60 characters that includes the phrase near the front.
- A direct answer in the first two sentences.
- Descriptive headings that a reader could skim like a table of contents.
- Short paragraphs of two to four sentences.
- Internal links to your related pages, with descriptive anchor text.
- Sources for claims, linked to the original.
- No keyword stuffing. Google's spam policies define it as "filling a web page with keywords or numbers in an attempt to manipulate rankings" (Google spam policies).
How has AI search changed SEO writing?
AI search added a second goal: being quoted. This is often called answer engine optimization, or AEO. Google's AI Overviews, ChatGPT and Perplexity now answer many questions directly and cite a few sources. To be one of them, content needs clean, self-contained answers and facts with sources.
Research backs this up. A study presented at KDD 2024 found that adding statistics, quotations and citations raised content's visibility in AI-generated answers by about 30–40%, while keyword stuffing lowered it (Aggarwal et al., arXiv:2311.09735). In other words, the things that make writing trustworthy to people also make it useful to AI. I go deeper in generative engine optimization strategies and how AI Overviews affect SEO.
Do you need an SEO writer?
You can learn SEO writing yourself, and the steps above are a solid start. Hiring makes sense when you need content regularly, compete in a crowded market, or want your time on your actual business. If you're weighing that, my breakdown of SEO content writing prices shows what each budget gets you.

FAQ
Is SEO writing the same as copywriting?
Not quite. Copywriting aims to persuade someone to act, such as buying or signing up. SEO writing aims to be found and to answer a search. Many pages need both: SEO writing gets the visitor there, and copywriting turns them into a customer.
How long should an SEO article be?
As long as the topic needs and no longer. Look at the pages ranking for your keyword: if they're all 1,500 words, a 400-word page probably won't cover enough, but adding filler to reach a word count doesn't help either.
Can AI do SEO writing?
AI tools can help with research and first drafts, but they can't add your first-hand experience, original data or a careful fact check. Google's spam policies specifically warn against using generative AI "to generate many pages without adding value for users."
How long does SEO writing take to show results?
For a new page, expect weeks to a few months before it settles into a position, depending on competition and your site's authority. Pages on established sites with good internal links tend to rank faster.
